Projects, Projects, Projects!

We worked on lots of projects in summer school. These projects helped us improve language arts skills such as writing, vocabulary, public speaking, and comprehension while also practicing other subject areas (math, science, social studies).

hamburger-sa.JPG“Hamburger” Stories
We worked very hard on our “hamburger” stories! We made sure our stories had topic sentences, details, and conclusions. We added details, tried to start our sentences differently, and edited for correct punctuation.

slideshowpic.gifSlide Shows
We created and presented slide shows about China, Egypt, and Animal Habitats!

sc-si.jpgConcept Maps
We read some nonfiction passages about frogs and the water cycle. Then, we created Frog Life Cycle and Water Cycle illustrations using the computer.

g-ie.jpgGraphs
We scooped, counted, and graphed coins! We published our graphs on the computer.

Maps
We found places from our reading (Horrible Harry) on Google Earth. We also wrote about places that were important to us and found them on Google Maps.

img_0235.JPGArt Work
We created giant Horrible Harry characters based on the book Horrible Harry Goes to Sea! Our characters match the descriptions we read in the book. It was hard to find details in the text, but we did an awesome job making sure artwork matched!

Podcasts
We recorded stories that we wrote on an iPod. We listened to each other’s stories on the computer and wrote messages back and forth. Listening to the stories helped us improve our writing. You can listen too on our blog!

Published Book!
Our class is published! Yep, that’s right! We wrote a book! A copy for checkout will be available in each of the Salem City Elementary School Libraries. Remind your child to look for it at the beginning of the year or to ask his or her librarian. The publishing company can print a book for you too! Keep watching this blog for more information. The book should be available by the end of next week (August 3).
